What Are the Safest and Most Dangerous Neighborhoods in San Antonio, TX?
San Antonio’s crime rate is slightly higher than that of similarly sized cities throughout the country. That doesn’t mean there aren’t any safe neighborhoods in the area, but at the same time, it also means there are some especially dangerous areas that you’ll want to be wary of.
The 3 Neighborhoods With Some of the Lowest Crime Rates
Three of the safest neighborhoods in San Antonio include the following:
-
Northeastern Alamo Heights
The northeastern portion of Alamo Heights is one of the safest areas in the city. Other segments of Alamo Heights, particularly in the southwest, have moderate crime rates. But even then, the crime rates in those pockets fall below the levels experienced toward the center of San Antonio.
-
Cibolo
Cibolo is an upscale, suburban community located in the far northeastern reaches of San Antonio. It’s home to some excellent schools, restaurants, and parks, making it an attractive option for families with small children. Cibolo’s crime rate is also much lower than that of central San Antonio, and it falls well below the national average as well.
-
Timberwood Park
Timberwood Park, also located in the upper San Antonio region, is a custom-home community that covers over 2,200 acres and represents one of the top neighborhoods in the entire city. Residents enjoy scenic views of rolling hills and lots of great neighborhood amenities, including a swimming pool, playground, and 30-acre park.
The 3 Worst Neighborhoods in San Antonio
On the flip side, the three following areas have some of the highest rates of overall crime, which include burglary, theft, vandalism, and driving under the influence (DUI). They also have high rates of violent crimes, such as robberies and assaults:
-
Hein-Orchard
Hein-Orchard ranks as one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the greater San Antonio area. Its property crime rate is 5,514 per 100,000 residents, and violent crimes are also quite common, ultimately making the area a high-risk place to live.
-
Coliseum Oaks
Coliseum Oaks, located to the west of Hein-Orchard, is a small neighborhood with a property crime rate of 13,165 per 100,000 and a violent crime rate of 1,728 per 100,000 people. It has some of the lowest median incomes and median home values in all of San Antonio.
-
Artesia Community Guild
The Artesia Community Guild has a population of just over 1,200 people. Still, its violent crime rate is even higher than Coliseum Oaks, and the median income in the area is the worst in the city. Like many of the more dangerous places in San Antonio, Artesia has very little retail property, which makes obtaining basic necessities a challenge.
How To Use a Crime Map
While you may not be able to avoid higher crime areas altogether, it’s important to be aware of your surroundings and current trends in neighborhoods you frequent. To that end, an interactive crime map can help you identify areas of San Antonio with lower crime rates, as well as areas that may be more dangerous.
What San Antonio Crime Rates Mean For You
The safety of a neighborhood is an important consideration when visiting a friend or finding a place to live. You want to be in an area that is safe for you and your loved ones.
